Authors: Wouters, Saskia G.M.; Spek, Annelies A.
Abstract: The present study compared 21 high functioning individuals with autism, 21 individuals with schizophrenia and 21 healthy individuals in self-reported features of autism, as measured by the Autism-spectrum Quotient (AQ). The individuals with autism reported impairment on all AQ subscales, compared to the neurotypical group. The schizophrenia group reported deficits on
all subscales except Attention to detail, compared to the neurotypical group.
The autism group reported more impairment than the individuals with schizophrenia in Social skill, Communication and Attention switching.

Abstract: Time–budgets summarize how the time of objects is distributed over a number of categories. Usually they are collected in object by category matrices with the property that rows of this data matrix add up to one. In this paper we discuss a model for the analysis of time–budgets that used this property. The model approximates the observed time–budgets by weighted sums of a number of latent time–budgets. These latent time–budgets determine the behavior of all objects. Special attention is given to the identification of the model. The model is compared with logcontrast principal component analysis.

vermoeidheids- en depressieve klachten. Inmiddels is naar deze gevolgen veel onderzoek gedaan. Daarentegen is veel minder

Authors: Mulder, Laetitia; Verboon, Peter; de Cremer, David
Abstract: In order to induce people to follow rules, sanctions are often introduced. In this paper we argue for the importance of
studying the positive influence of sanctioning systems on people’s moral convictions regarding the rule advocated by
the sanction and of studying factors that moderate this influence. In three experiments we tested the influence of sanction
severity and showed that severe sanctions evoke stronger moral judgments with regard to rule-breaking behavior and
stronger social disapproval towards rule-breakers than mild sanctions. This was particularly the case when trust in
authorities is high rather than low. Implications of these findings are discussed. Also, a framework is proposed to
understand the possible circumstances that determine whether sanctions either increase or decrease moral norms.

Abstract: As the incoming editor of the Annual Review of Sex Research (ARSR), I was asked to state my goals for the forthcoming series of issues, and I gladly take this opportunity. From the early years of my own work in sex research, the ARSR has been one of my most
important resources. Its contributions always brought me comprehensiveness and scholarly excellence, whatever the topic of the article. Thus, it may not come as a surprise that I am dedicated to maintain this high standard of quality and comprehensiveness of the reviews that make it into ARSR. Below, I highlight some of the quality criteria that color my view of what are good and worthwhile review articles.

Authors: Verboon, Peter; Heiser, Willem
Abstract: It is commonly known that many techniques for data analysis based on the least squares criterion are very sensitive to outliers in the data. Gabriel and Odoroff (1984) suggested a resistant approach for lower rank approximation of matrices. In this approach, weights are used to diminish the influence of outliers on the low-dimensional representation. The present paper uses iterative majorization to provide for a general algorithm for such resistant lower rank approximations which guarantees convergence. It is shown that the weights can be chosen in different ways corresponding with different objective functions. Some possible extensions of the algorithm are discussed.

Authors: Waterink, Wim
Abstract: If the human sex drive is an evolutionarily-instigated motivation towards procreation, then the strength of men and women’s sex drive should be dependent on factors affecting offspring. In this study, the effect of gender was investigated among 534 participants by means of a survey that was based on evolutionary adaptations underlying sexual behaviour, This survey the basis for a new research line. Analysis of covariance showed that, in general, men have a higher sex drive than women. These results are in line with studies of sexual selection and partner choice preferences where evolved behavioural manifestations of sex drive facilitate the competition and rivalry for access to a partner, and where men differ from women with regard to their participation in parental investment.

Authors: Verboon, Peter; van Dijke, Marius
Abstract: Building on theoretical notions that severe sanctions (more than mild ones) can communicate
that sanctioned behavior is morally unacceptable, we argued that particularly authorities
who enact the sanction procedures in a fair manner stimulate compliance with their
decisions. This is because such authorities should be considered legitimate to communicate
what is morally acceptable and unacceptable. This interactive effect of sanction size and
procedural fairness on compliance should thus be mediated by moral evaluations of the
authority. A field survey and an experiment revealed support for these predictions. These
results thus support a non-instrumental perspective on the effectiveness of sanction severity
in increasing compliance with authorities.
