Abstract: Educational modelling languages, such as IMS LD, provide metadata, much like the LOM describes metadata for learning objects. However, there are vast differences, and it would be a grave mistake not to appreciate those. The paper, being a preface to a special issue on educational modelling languages, briefly discusses why we should continue to put efforts in such languages, in developing authoring and runtime environments.
