Abstract: This booklet introduces the E-LEN approach to designing effective e-learning environments by using design patterns to guide the design process. It has been produced by the E-LEN project team, a network of European institutions with experience in e-learning who together share and develop information and design patterns regarding e-learning. There are three parts to this booklet: - Part I provides background information about design patterns, their origins and how and why we want to use them for e-learning. - Part II provides material for use when running or participating within a workshop that aims to develop design patterns for e-learning. - Part III provides notes and references.
